Mother’s Day is right around the corner (May 8th people!) and this time of year always has me thinking about the mothers in my life; and there are a quite a few. Besides my own mom, mother-in-law and their friends and family that treat me like one of their own, I have the mothers of my students to think about as well. It is such a blessing to be surrounded by so many giving and caring women.
This year I have been spending quite a bit of my time thinking about the women that have don’t have children of their own and have chosen to care for others in a “motherly” way without giving birth to tiny humans. Enter my sister-in-law. I have know her since 2009 and she has been through a lot in the 7 years I have known her. But through it all she continues to give of herself.
She has never been without a foster animal or straight up gimpy animal of some sort. One of my favorites was Gladys the Chihuahua, who not only had breast cancer but was pretty much blind and deaf too. My sister-in-law took her in and gave her the best life she could have had and Gladdy (as we all gladly called her, haha) survived longer than any of us anticipated and that was all thanks to my sister-in-law.
No matter what troubles she is going through, she tries to find some small way to help creatures great and small. She has helped Anthony and I move before and will soon be helping us again, since our house is almost ready. She has been there for her friends in their times of need. She has made tough choices to change her life for the better. We have lived in the same state, the same house and 1,000 miles apart but I know we will always remain close.
This Mother’s Day when you are thinking about the special moms in your life also remember the women who give of themselves in ways other than being a parent. I am so blessed to have my sister-in-law in my life and look forward to many more years of tormenting her brother (my husband) together.
